This chang.e also builds up the par.ts .of Dr Mortimer and Lo.rd Charles, yet at th.e same time pro.vides a n.ice introduction to the .is-he-sinister .or is-he-a-g.ood-guy Barrymo.re, deftly played her.e by Fritz Rasp. Despit.e t.he sting .of its well-develo.ped story, the spellb.indingly atmospher.ic direction and the eng.ros.sing performances del.ivered by the entire .cast, many fans. may find. this version somewhat d.isappointing. F.or at least .three reasons: .As in the novel, the .part played in the narra.tiv.e by Sher.lock Holmes, thoug.h vital, is minimal. .And in this versio.n, not only has no attem.pt .been made to enlarge .his role, if anything. both writer an.d directo.r do their best to minim.ize it. Holmes .does not eve.n make his entr.ance for half-an-hour., and when he does final.ly .appear, h.e has his back to .the camera. It is Fri.tz Odemar, as Dr W.atson, who receives the .mor.e favorable camera an.gles. And there is a .purpose in this.. It is W.atson, not Holmes, who f.igures as the m.ain protagon.ist of The Houn.d of the Baskervilles.. For the bulk of the na.rra.tive, Hol.mes disappears. It. is Watson and Lord H.enry (Peter Voss) .who take up the running.. Th.e movie is almost ove.r, before Holmes clos.es in on the vi.llain. An.d even so, this is not t.he obsessed, se.lf-important. Holmes we are .accustomed to see tak.ing charge. Another prob.lem. is that .the title hound it.self does not figure .a great deal in th.e action, a downgrading .whi.ch will undoubtedly r.ate as another major .disappointment .for fans.. And finally, it could b.e argued that t.he script gi.ves too much at.tention to Conan Doyl.e's red herring, the. es.caped con.vict, and not enou.gh to the real villai.n. This said, it .must surely be admitted .by .all, that Odemar'.s interpretation of W.atson—intellige.nt, charm.ing, level-headed, coura.geous and resou.rceful—is mu.ch closer to Co.nan Doyle's conce.ption than either the bu.ngl.ing, inve.terately stupid Ni.gel Bruce or the self.-effacing Ian Flem.ing. One other player d.ese.rves special mention:. Erich Ponto (Dr Wink.el in The Third. Man) who. seems exactly right for. Stapleton.
