Later that afternoon,. Professo.r Lufkin shows Higgins a.round the sc.ience lab where De.xter i.s working on an. experiment with invi.sibility and another stu.dent, Dru.ffle, explores the fligh.t of b.umblebees. That night, duri.ng a powe.rful thunderstorm, th.e roof of the lab is struck. by lightning, sending a cu.rrent of .electricity down a metal. beam and th.rough Dexter's. compl.ex experiment c.omponents. The next d.ay, as Dexter examines h.is burnt .equipment with dismay, H.iggins. meets with A.J. Arno, a re.cently re.leased prisoner, who .had also purchased Medfield.'s mortgage. When Dexte.r acciden.tally drops one half of .his glasses .into a container o.f his .experimental fo.rmula, it appears as .if the substance destroy.s them, b.ut upon closer examinati.on, De.xter realizes the frames ar.e merely .partially invisible. .After several tests, Dexter. places his fingers in the .liquid an.d they disappear. Schuyl.er and Debbi.e arrive and are h.orrifi.ed to see Dexte.r with a partial hand., but Dexter insists Sch.uyler tes.t the substance as well,. admit.ting only afterward that he. does not. yet have an antidote..　　Just then, Higgins bring.s Arno to visit the lab, st.unning th.e students, as only two .years earlie.r, Dexter was inst.rument.al in exposing .Arno's crooked ga.mbling scheme. Dexter an.d the oth.ers notice that Arno is .more c.oncerned with the campus ar.chitectur.e than Higgins' s.peech. Curious about Arno&#.39;s behavior, Dexter convi.nces Schu.yler to use the invisibi.lity formula. to sneak into Arn.o'.s office that n.ight. Although they a.re nearly discovered whe.n Schuyle.r steps into a puddle, m.aking .his tennis shoes visible, t.he boys g.et inside Arno's .office where they find a mo.del of Medfield College red.esigned a.s a sprawling gambling e.stablishment.. After taking pho.tos of. the model, the. boys flee with Debbi.e's help.　　The next .day Dexte.r shows the photos to Lu.fkin a.nd Higgins. Convinced that .Druffle&#.39;s bumblebee study .would draw attention and in.vestments to Medfield, Higg.ins react.s angrily when Dexter as.sures him th.at his invisibilit.y form.ula could win t.he top prize money in. the upcoming Forsythe s.cience co.ntest. Not having admitt.ed to .anyone that Medfield has be.en droppe.d from the contest fo.r being too insignificant, .Higgins contacts the contes.t's s.ponsor, millionaire Timo.thy Forsythe., and agrees to me.et ove.r a game of gol.f, despite his inabil.ity to play. Upon learni.ng of Hig.gins' plan and suspe.cting .it must be connected with r.aising mo.ney for the college, .Dexter urges Schuyler to vo.lunteer to serve as Higgins.' cad.dy while, hidden by the .invisibility. formula, he will .take c.ontrol of Higgi.ns' golf ball. At. the golf club, Forsythe. and the .state university dean, C.olling.sgood, are amazed by Higgin.s' qu.irky golfing abilitie.s, which include numerous h.ole-in-one-shots, as is Arn.o who is .also at the club.　　After. the game, F.orsythe agrees to .reinst.ate Medfield in.to the competition. M.eanwhile, Arno accidenta.lly sees .Dexter becoming visible .in the. club showers and grows sus.picious. .When the local televi.sion news covers Higgins.9; extraordinary golf game,. he is in.vited to join an exclusi.ve tournamen.t in nearby Ocean .City. .Convinced that .he will win enough mo.ney to pay the college&#.39;s mort.gage, Higgins brashly ac.cepts .and that afternoon departs .with Schu.yler. Learning of the. tournament from Druffle to.o late, Dexter misses the p.lane and .is forced to watch the c.ompetition o.n television where. Higgi.ns' game ag.ainst two professiona.ls is a disaster. Arno a.nd his he.nchmen, Cookie and Alfre.d, als.o watch the tournament and .ponder Hi.ggins' odd incons.istency. Hoping to assuage .the crestfallen Higgins, Lu.fkin suggests that they giv.e Dexter&.#39;s unproven formula a. chance and .the dean reluctant.ly agr.ees.　　That even.ing, Cookie, disguise.d as a janitor, sneaks i.nto the c.ampus lab where he witne.sses D.exter and Schuyler using th.e invisib.ility spray and repor.ts to Arno, who orders him .to return and steal it. The. followin.g day, Forsythe and memb.ers of his c.ommittee arrive on. campu.s to judge the .best science experime.nt at the college. Unawa.re that t.heir spray bottle has be.en rep.laced by Cookie, Dexter and. Schuyler. make their presentat.ion and are stunned when it. has no effect. Forsythe an.d Higgins. depart as Dexter remain.s confused u.ntil he chats with. Charl.ie the janitor.. Learning that there .is no night janitor, Dex.ter reali.zes that Cookie likely s.tole t.he formula. Concluding that. Arno mus.t be behind the theft., Dexter plants a walkie-ta.lkie in his office.　　A coup.le of day.s later, Schuyler overhe.ars Arno plo.tting with Cookie .to rob. the Medfield B.ank by making themsel.ves and the money invisi.ble. Cert.ain that if he could ret.rieve .the formula before the Fors.ythe Awar.d announcement that n.ight he could still win the. contest, Dexter sends Schu.yler to t.he police and goes to in.form the ban.k's president,. Wilfr.ed Sampson. Whe.n both the police and. Sampson dismiss the boy.s' st.ory about invisibility, .Dexter. and his friends gather out.side of t.he bank. When an invi.sible Arno and Cookie knock. out the guards and take th.e money, .Dexter unsuccessfully tr.ies to use a. fire hydrant to h.ose th.e men down as t.hey exit the bank. Sa.mpson contacts the polic.e, who jo.in the college students .in a w.ild chase of the car driven. by the i.nvisible robbers.　　Af.ter briefly eluding everyon.e, Arno orders Cookie to ma.ke the ca.r invisible, but they ar.e spotted on. a dirt road in a .park. .Deducing Arno w.ill not leave town bu.t go to his home instead., Dexter .drives there and forces .Arno&#.39;s car into a swimming po.ol where .it, the money, and th.e men become visible. Arno .and his henchmen are arrest.ed. Dexte.r and the others dash to. the present.ation of the Forsy.the Aw.ard and plead f.or one more opportuni.ty to demonstrate their .invention.. Frustrated by Dexter&#.39;s d.etermination, Higgins inter.venes jus.t as Dexter sprays Sc.huyler, and, again, there i.s no result. Realizing the .dip in th.e pool has diluted the f.ormula, Dext.er tries to explai.n to F.orsythe. Just w.hen Higgins tells eve.ryone for the last time .that invi.sibility does not exist,. the t.op half of him becomes invi.sible, th.us shocking the group. and winning the top prize .to save Medfield for anothe.r year.
