How.ever as he is forced to dea.l drugs and kill to keep. his cover h.e finds the lines between c.op and criminal being lo.st – i.s he a cop pretending to. be a dealer or. a .dealer prete.nding to be a cop　　La.rry (as he was then) Fis.hburne's first .lead role was a typicall.y dark. vehicle. Th.e story is the usual one of. cop losing himself when. undercover,. however it manages to be m.ore than that for most o.f the .time. Co-written by Tolk.in, who wrote T.he .Player, this. naturally has a nice. cynical edge to it when. it looks at th.e US's hypocritical appr.oach t.o drug contr.ol and the political links .between the street hustl.ers and the .political high rollers who .court respectability. Th.e stor.y does eventually settle. into a traditi.ona.l setting bu.t even then it works .well as a thriller.　　The. multi-talented. Bill Duke directs well .with a. gritty feel. and a few nice touches. Ho.wever several things are. a bit iffy.. For most of the film Fishb.urne's narrationvoice ov.er is .a bit like a cross betwe.en Apocalypse N.ow .and Blade Ru.nner – it comes acros.s as a little too dark a.nd heavy and al.so explains things like .we can.'t figure it. out ourselves. However onc.e you get into the film .it's not as .big a deal. My main problem. lies with the character.s.　　Fi.shburne is excellent, a .real model of u.nde.rlying anger. and violence, Goldbl.um is good but perhaps a. little OTT on .the yuppieviolence thing., but .there's good. support from Smith and Spi.n City's beautiful (and .often underu.sed – but not here) Victori.a Dillard. However the t.wo mai.n white characters (Gold.blum and Smith). ar.e both smear.ed with racist insinu.ations – Smith appears t.o insult his bl.ack officers and doesn't. care .about the ju.nkies, while Goldblum is fa.scinated about all thing.s black and .talks about them as wild be.autiful beasts and loves. havin.g sex with black'. These. things aren't .a m.ajor problem., but with basically .only two white character.s in it, it's a. little worrying that bo.th are. given that .edge.　　However these are mi.nor complaints that get .lost with a .good thriller. Fishburne ex.cels and Duke delivers a. story. that is a good thriller. but also has a. ja.ded, subvers.ive edge.
