The .story does eventua.lly. settle into a tra.ditional .setting but even then it. works well as a t.hriller. The multi-tale.nted Bill Duke dir.ects well. with a g.ritty feel and .a few nice touches.. H.owever several thi.ngs are a. bit iffy. For most of t.he film Fishburne'.s narrationvoice over is. a bit like a cros.s between. Apocalyp.se Now and Blad.e Runner – it come.s a.cross as a little .too dark .and heavy and also expla.ins things like we. can't figure it out our.selves. However on.ce you ge.t into th.e film it's not. as big a deal. My. ma.in problem lies wi.th the ch.aracters. Fishburne is .excellent, a real .model of underlying ange.r and violence, Go.ldblum is. good but. perhaps a litt.le OTT on the yupp.iev.iolence thing, but. there's .good support from Smith .and Spin City's be.autiful (and often under.used – but not her.e) Victor.ia Dillar.d. However the .two main white cha.rac.ters (Goldblum and. Smith) a.re both smeared with rac.ist insinuations –. Smith appears to insult. his black officer.s and doe.sn't care. about the junk.ies, while Goldblu.m i.s fascinated about. all thin.gs black and talks about. them as wild beau.tiful beasts and loves h.aving sex with bla.ck'. Thes.e things .aren't a major .problem, but with .bas.ically only two wh.ite chara.cters in it, it's a litt.le worrying that b.oth are given that edge.. However these ar.e minor c.omplaints. that get lost .with a good thrill.er..
