Although th.e film has a. vibrant and instr.uctive way of communi.cating. the different epo.chs and styles to studen.ts, it do.es not. exhib.it the artis.tic. quality that usually disti.nguishes a Dreyer film, exc.ept perhaps in .some of the costum.es, which were originally m.ade for Day of Wrath.　　The .board of Dansk Kultur.film in autumn 1945 d.ecided that their planne.d church fil.m would exclusivel.y be about village ch.urches.. Dreyer would rew.ork the script that was .written b.y edit.or and. folk high-s.cho.ol principal Bernhard Jense.n, aided by a committee of .experts consist.ing of architect H.. Lønborg-Jensen and Victor. Hermansen, curator at the .National Museum of De.nmark. Dreyer had a f.irst draft ready in mid-.March, entit.led Kirken er et g.ammelt Hus (The Churc.h Is a.n Old House), whic.h was distributed to the. members .of the. commi.ttee for the.ir .comments.　　In the last half. of July, Dreyer and Victor. Hermansen trav.elled the country .to look at suitable churche.s. They researched the deta.ils and at Dreyer’s r.equest a number of te.chnical changes were mad.e to the chu.rches, including t.he removal of porcela.in hol.ders for electrica.l wiring in Tveje Merløs.e Church..　　On 4. July,. Dreyer went. in. advance to Ringkøbing. Sho.oting was set to start a fe.w days later wi.th the arrival of .the director of photography., Preben Frank, who had fal.len off a ladder and .broken his leg, Fortu.nately, he was ready to .cautiously s.tart working again. within a few days, w.ith hi.s leg in a cast.　　.Otherwise, the productio.n went wi.thout .a glit.ch. Everywhe.re,. Dreyer said, they were wel.l received at the vicarages. and they had n.o problem getting .enough extras. On 1 august,. they returned to Copenhage.n with almost all the.ir footage in the can.. They only needed to fi.lm the churc.h in Skelby, where. the weather had been. again.st them, plus a Sw.edish wooden church in H.edared. T.he eco.nomy w.as distresse.d s.o soon after the war, espec.ially when it came to forei.gn currency, bu.t there were no re.al wooden churches left in .Denmark and building an int.erior set in the stud.io would be too expen.sive.　　The finished film. was shown f.or the first time .on 24 September 1947 .to a s.mall, closed circl.e, which included the Mi.nister fo.r Eccl.esiast.ical Affairs.. I.n December 1947, as was Dan.sk Kulturfilm’s standard pr.actice, the fil.m was presented to. the press, politicians and. others on a programme with. four other short fil.ms.
