Each period is s.eparated by a shot of. a .church bell .double.-exposed on the sky. .Although the. film has a vibran.t and instructive .way of commu.nicating .the differen.t epoc.hs and styles to student.s, it does not exhibi.t the artistic quality t.hat us.ually distingui.shes a Dreyer f.ilm, except perhaps in s.ome of the costumes, .whi.ch were orig.inally. made for Day of Wrat.h. The boar.d of Dansk Kulturf.ilm in autumn 1945. decided tha.t their p.lanned churc.h film. would exclusively be ab.out village churches.. Dreyer would rework the. scrip.t that was writ.ten by editor a.nd folk high-school prin.cipal Bernhard Jensen., a.ided by a co.mmitte.e of experts consisti.ng of archit.ect H. Lønborg-Jen.sen and Victor Her.mansen, cura.tor at th.e National M.useum .of Denmark. Dreyer had a. first draft ready in. mid-March, entitled Kir.ken er. et gammelt Hus. (The Church Is. an Old House), which wa.s distributed to the .mem.bers of the .commit.tee for their comment.s. In the l.ast half of July, .Dreyer and Victor .Hermansen tr.avelled t.he country t.o look. at suitable churches. T.hey researched the de.tails and at Dreyer’s re.quest .a number of tec.hnical changes .were made to the churche.s, including the remo.val. of porcelai.n hold.ers for electrical wi.ring in Tvej.e Merløse Church. . On 4 July, Dreyer. went in adv.ance to R.ingkøbing. S.hootin.g was set to start a few. days later with the .arrival of the director .of pho.tography, Prebe.n Frank, who ha.d fallen off a ladder an.d broken his leg, For.tun.ately, he wa.s read.y to cautiously start. working aga.in within a few da.ys, with his leg i.n a cast. O.therwise,. the product.ion we.nt without a glitch. Eve.rywhere, Dreyer said,. they were well received. at th.e vicarages and. they had no pr.oblem getting enough ext.ras. On 1 august, the.y r.eturned to C.openha.gen with almost all t.heir footage. in the can. They .only needed to fil.m the church. in Skelb.y, where the. weath.er had been against them., plus a Swedish wood.en church in Hedared. Th.e econ.omy was distres.sed so soon aft.er the war, especially w.hen it came to foreig.n c.urrency, but. there. were no real wooden .churches lef.t in Denmark and b.uilding an interio.r set in the. studio w.ould be too .expens.ive. The finished film .was shown for the fir.st time on 24 September .1947 t.o a small, clos.ed circle, whic.h included the Minister .for Ecclesiastical Af.fai.rs.
